What is The 1 Million Project?
A social experiment asking whether one million people will each contribute £1. The project is run by an anonymous medical student and publicly tracks its stated goals and financial activity.
Why are you anonymous?
The project is intended to focus on the experiment and its outcomes rather than the identity of the person behind it. Anonymity does not remove the obligation to be financially transparent.
Why £1 million if the First Mission is £500,000?
£1 million is the social experiment: one million £1 contributions. The First Mission is £500,000 in intended allocations from net available funds. Payment-processing fees mean £500,000 gross contributions will not equal £500,000 net available for allocation. Any intended use of net funds beyond the First Mission will be published before those funds are used.
Where does the first £500,000 go?
£50,000 for Medical School Tuition Fees; £25,000 for mum’s shoulder treatment; £50,000 for parents’ retirement support; £5,000 for a family holiday; £10,000 for a car for medical placements; £25,000 each for an Alzheimer’s & dementia charity, a hospice charity, Doctors Without Borders, a Young Carers Charity, a Children’s Hospice, Disability Accessibility, Guide Dogs / Assistance Dogs, Clean Water Projects, Disaster Relief, Homelessness, Domestic Abuse Support, and Animal Rescue & Welfare; £50,000 for a Scholarship for a Future Doctor; and £10,000 for a Youth Opportunity Fund.
Is this a charity?
No. This is a personal crowdfunding / social experiment. Only the stated charitable portion is intended for charity. Contributions to the project should not be described as tax-deductible charitable donations unless a qualifying arrangement actually makes them so.
Can I contribute more than £1?
The project is intentionally configured around a fixed £1 checkout. The aim is one person, one £1 contribution. Please do not deliberately make repeated payments to increase the counter.
How will I know the totals are real?
The live tracker is designed to count successful, non-refunded £1 checkout records received through Stripe and stored in the project’s private database. The public counter is not manually increased. The tracker measures verified transactions rather than performing identity checks on supporters.
Will personal or medical documents be posted?
Only where appropriate, and with identifying information removed. Names, addresses, student identifiers, hospital numbers and other sensitive details should not be published.
What happens if the project never reaches the target?
The project can still allocate funds according to its published commitments. The legal and refund position should match the terms of the payment provider and the project’s published policies.
Does £1 paid mean £1 reaches the published causes?
No. The public tracker shows gross £1 contributions. Stripe/payment-processing fees, refunds, disputes and unavoidable operating costs reduce the net amount available. The £500,000 First Mission is a set of intended allocation targets from net available funds.
Are the charities involved with or endorsing this project?
No endorsement or partnership should be assumed unless the website expressly says otherwise. Named charities are planned recipients. Where a specific recipient has not yet been named, the organisation will be published before a transfer is made.
Can I claim Gift Aid or a tax deduction?
No. Your £1 goes to this personal crowdfunding project, not directly to a registered charity. It is not presented as a Gift Aid donation or as tax-deductible charitable giving.
Is my supporter number proof that I am a unique person?
No. A supporter number is assigned to a verified £1 checkout. We ask each person to contribute once, but the project does not perform identity verification, so the public count should be understood as verified £1 contributions rather than a guaranteed count of unique natural persons.
